Reprieve Spring Newsletter 2010: Reprieve around the world

on 20 April 2010

Reprieve works for those in need of legal representation around the world – prisoners who would otherwise be held with no chance of justice and a fair trial. This map shows some of our current cases.

Eagle Base Tuzla: Bosina -  We have identified eight prisoners held beyond the rule of law at Eagle Base in Tuzla in Bosnia since 2001, including Nihad Karsic and Almin Hardaus.

Dubai-  Reprieve client Mark Arnold is a British national currently on trial for murder in Dubai. He will face the death penalty if found guilty.

Bagram Airbase: Afghanistan- We represent former Bagram prisoners and are working to identify and help some of the 600-plus still held without trial at Bagram Airbase by the US military.

Pakistan -   After two weeks of torture and almost six years in prison without trial, Naheem Hussain and Rehan Zaman from Birmingham are facing execution in Pakistan.

Prison Ships USS Bataan & USS Peleliu-  We have identified 17 US ships that have been used as floating prisons since 2001, holding men away from the rule of law and away from public or media scrutiny, including USS Bataan and USS Peleliu.

Diego Garcia- The British-owned island of Diego Garcia has a military base run by the UK and the US. It has been used for illegal rendition and detention of prisoners including Mohammed Saad Iqbal Madni.

Iraq- Former British soldier Daniel Fitzsimons is facing execution in Iraq after being arrested in August on suspicion of murder. We believe Daniel has serious mental health problems as a result of his years of service with the British army.

Kisangani: Democratic Republic of Congo-   British/Norwegian national and Reprieve client Joshua French, together with Norwegian Tjostolv Moland, has been sentenced to death by firing squad at a military tribunal in Kisangani, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Guantánamo Bay-  We represent 21 of the 188 prisoners still held in Guantánamo Bay. More than 57 of our clients have been released to date.

Texas- After a catastrophically flawed trial, British grandmother Linda Carty was sentenced to death in February 2002 by a Texan court and is now dangerously close to execution. We are fighting for Linda at every turn.

San Quentin: California -  British national Kenny Gay has been on death row in San Quentin since 1985 despite a bizarre trial process and dubious case against him. We continue to work for his freedom.
