Reprieve Chairman, Paul Hamann has executive produced this documentary by Wild Pictures which portrays the life of Atefah Sahaaleh. Executed in the Northern Iranian town of Neka for “crimes against chastity”, Sahaaleh was, despite court papers suggesting she was 22, only 16 when her life was tragically ended. Growing up without a mother and with a father suffering from drug addiction, Atefah lacked the parental guidance and support most children have. A combination of dramatised reconstruction and secretly filmed footage, Execution of a Teenage Girl, described as an ‘impressive film’ by the Times, is a powerful account of the events leading to her execution.
There remain other women in Iran awaiting execution for “crimes against chastity”, and Reprieve welcomes this documentary as part of uncovering the hidden truth of Atefah’s story and that of others who face the same fate.
