RE: Samantha Orobator, pregnant British woman on trial in Laos

The APPG will discuss the case of Samantha Orobator, the 20 year-old pregnant British national in Phongthong Prison, Laos. Reprieve has been notified that Samantha’s trial will be held on Tuesday 12th or Wednesday 13th May 2009.
The meeting will highlight key issues in the case, and develop strategy for ensuring due process for British nationals facing the death penalty abroad.
Speakers:
(1) Anna Morris, Reprieve lawyer in Laos, reports via videolink on the trial.
(2) Mary Canham, psychologist, on mental health concerns for Samantha.
(3) Amnesty International on prison conditions in Laos and pregnancy.
(4) Clare Algar, Executive Director of Reprieve, on how best to assist Samantha and others in her predicament.
(5) Ronke Oseni, lifelong friend of Samantha’s, on her personal situation.
Reprieve also hopes that Harriet Harman, Samantha Orobator’s MP, may be available to talk about the British government’s action on the case.
