Reprieve’s strategy for holding powerful governments to account includes ensuring that cases are investigated properly. Unfortunately, in many jurisdictions the investigation of a case by law enforcement is one sided, and critical facts that are favorable to a defendant are overlooked or suppressed by the state’s prosecuting agency. Reprieve’s investigators take time out from their careers to work for three to six months overseas on a specific case, gathering the facts needed to mount a proper defence, either at trial, on appeal or in clemency proceedings.
Reprieve has also initiated a longer term investigation into the practice of ‘extraordinary rendition,’ - illegally moving prisoners to countries with a reputation for torture to be interrogated. For more information on this work, click here.
