All the amazing films below are powerful testimonies to the issues Reprieve tackles.

Fourteen Days in May

This documentary tells the true story of the countdown to an execution in the USA. Edward Earl Johnson, a young African-American was put to death in the gas chamber of Mississippi's state penitentiary on 20 May 1987. Convicted of the murder of a white police officer, Edward protested his innocence until his death. Produced and directed by Reprieve's Chairman Paul Hamann for the BBC, the film crew were given access to the prison warden, guards and chaplain, and to Edward and his family. Paul Hamann received the BFI's Grierson Award for Fourteen Days in May. Clive Stafford Smith (Reprieve's Legal Director) represented Edward on his final appeals and fought to save his life up to the moment of his execution.

In Prison my Whole Life

Will Francome embarks on a journey into the dark heart of the American judicial system; the tangled world of renowned Death Row prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal. The connection between these two characters is a simple one as Will explains: "I was born in London on December 9th 1981. Over 3000 miles away Mumia Abu-Jamal, a Black Panther and radical journalist, was arrested for the murder of a police officer in Philadelphia. He claimed he was innocent but was sentenced to death and has  been awaiting execution ever since. I'm now 24 years old and in  that time Mumia has become the most famous and controversial death row inmate in America".

In Prison My Whole Life takes us to some surprising places and brings us into contact with some of America’s most original minds including Angela Davis, Mos Def, Noam Chomsky, Alice Walker, Snoop Dogg, Steve Earle, Amy Goodman and many others.

Clive Stafford Smith, Bad Men: Guantánamo Bay and the Secret Prisons
This revelatory book is a raw, first-hand account of the United States detention facilities at Guantánamo Bay, and the men held there, told by one of the few individuals who has had independent access to the prison.

Amazon says: "His book is quite simply, devastating, and many will laugh and cry reading it: laugh in disbelief, and cry in despair at the utter inhumanity and lack of imagination wrapped up in hypocrisy so enormous that it beggars understanding. Yet even in the face of insurmountable odds, Clive Stafford Smith remains an optimist. Few could maintain his capacity for work and his commitment to his clients if he allowed frustration or despair to divert him. His experiences, graphically recounted in this book, have enabled him to shine a bright, unblinking light into the darkest corners of illegality that are being justified by governments in the name of the War on Terror." Andy Worthington, The Guantánamo Files: The Stories of 774 Detainees in America's Illegal Prison
Who will speak for the 774 men who still remain in Guantánamo? This passionate and brilliantly detailed book brings their stories to the world for the first time.

Amazon says: "In 2006, four years after the illegal prison in Guantánamo Bay first opened, the Pentagon finally released the names of the 773 men held there, as well as 7,000 pages of transcripts from tribunals assessing their status as 'enemy combatants'. Andy Worthington is the only person to have analysed every page of these transcripts. Drawing on these documents, as well as news reports and interviews with lawyers and released detainees, this book reveals, for the first time, the stories of all those imprisoned in Guantánamo."
