Reprieve shortlisted for Charity Award

on 06 May 2010

We’re absolutely delighted that Reprieve’s ‘Life after Guantanamo’ [LAG] team has been shortlisted for a 2010 Charity Award. The prestigious Charity Awards recognise and celebrate excellence in leadership and management of charities.

The small LAG team (just Polly Rossdale and Chloe Davies) has had a significant impact on the lives of those released from Guantánamo Bay, as well as the push to get cleared prisoners released to Europe. To date, 44 men have been referred to the LAG team; 27 of them have been released from Guantánamo, and the LAG team has been directly involved in facilitating a range of medical, legal, social and financial support.

Since the project began in August 2009, LAG have assisted the resettlement of 11 men in Chad, Slovakia, France, Spain, Georgia, France, and Albania and have offered indirect support in a number of other European countries. This work involves travelling to the countries of resettlement and working with local partners to build supplementary support systems for the former prisoners to aid their integration. After suffering years of abuse and unlawful imprisonment, LAG have helped to give these former prisoners a new start in life. The results will be announced on 10th June – please do keep your fingers crossed for us!
