Reprieve Spring Newsletter 2010: Huge public support for Linda Carty

on 20 April 2010

Linda Carty

The increasingly desperate case of Reprieve client Linda Carty is gaining more and more attention in the media and online.

Linda, a British national born in St Kitts, is facing execution after eight years on death row in Texas. She was convicted of the murder of Joana Rodriguez in 2002, after three men testified against her in return for not facing the death penalty themselves. She was represented by a notoriously incompetent attorney with more ex-clients on death row than any other attorney in the US. If Linda is killed this summer she will be the first British woman executed since Ruth Ellis.

On International Women’s Day in March this year, nine high-profile women joined the fight to save Linda. Led by crime writer Martina Cole, actors Juliet Stevenson and Anna Chancellor, entrepreneur Martha Lane Fox, writers Esther Freud, Pauline Melville and Margaret Busby OBE, television presenter Diane Louise Jordan and Reprieve’s executive director Clare Algar (all pictured below) made a short film, I Support Linda Carty, outlining Linda’s case and expressing their support for Linda.

.

In February a letter from a distinguished and high-profilie group of Linda’s supporters was published in the Sunday Times .

The fight for Linda continues. You can watch the film, sign the petition and find out more at www.reprieve.org.uk/savelindacarty
