Card from Kris and Marita Maharaj
22.09.2008
In 1987, Krishna Maharaj, a British national, was convicted and sentenced to death for the murders of two men. When Reprieve became involved in his case, the investigation showed his conviction was the fault of poor representation and misconduct of the prosecution during his trial. Krishna has always maintained his innocence. In 2002 Reprieve, with the assistance of UK law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Derringer, achieved partial success in Krishna’s case when his death penalty sentence was lifted. Unfortunately however he was not released from jail and he was instead given a life sentence. Reprieve has never given up on his case and continues to work for his release. After a clemency request was rejected in early 2008, the Reprieve staff sent a card to Kris to help keep his hopes up. Several weeks ago the staff received a thank you letter back from Kris and his wife. Images of the card can be found below for your viewing.
